Why most valley homes have it
Architectural asphalt shingle is the default here because it balances cost, lifespan and looks better than anything else at the price. A quality architectural shingle carries a manufacturer material warranty measured in decades, handles wind well when it is nailed correctly, and comes in enough colors to satisfy any HOA.
Where it struggles in Idaho
Heat cycling. Valley summers bake a roof and winter nights drop it fifty degrees. That expansion and contraction is what ages shingles here, not rain. It is also why attic ventilation matters more than the shingle brand. A well-ventilated cheap roof will usually outlast a poorly ventilated expensive one.

Sometimes. A heavier shingle handles wind and hail better. But if the attic is not ventilated correctly, the upgrade will not deliver the years you paid for. We check ventilation on every inspection.
