How roof insurance claims work in Idaho after a storm
Roof claims are won or lost on two things: documentation and timing. Here is how the process works in Idaho, and the two traps that catch homeowners after every big storm.
First, know what storm damage looks like
Wind damage rarely means missing shingles. A gust can break the seal between shingles without visibly moving them. From the driveway your roof looks fine. Eighteen months later it leaks, and by then the claim window has usually closed.
Hail bruises rather than punctures. It knocks granules loose and damages the mat underneath, then UV finishes the job over the next two summers. It is genuinely hard to see from the ground, which is why valid hail claims so often go unfiled.
The deadline nobody mentions
Most policies require storm damage to be reported within a set window that runs from the date of the storm, not the date you noticed a problem. That is why invisible wind damage is so costly: the clock starts before you know anything is wrong. After any significant wind or hail event, a free dated inspection protects you either way. If there is no damage, you have documentation your roof was sound on that date, which is worth having.
How the claim actually works
You file it, not your roofer. In Idaho, a roofing contractor cannot file or negotiate your claim unless they hold a public adjuster license. Handling the claim itself is not something a roofer should be doing. What a good roofer does: document the damage with dated photos, write a detailed scope in the language adjusters use, meet the adjuster on your roof, and complete the approved work.
The two traps
Deductible games. A contractor offering to eat, waive, or absorb your deductible is proposing insurance fraud, and it is your name on the claim. Walk away.
Assignment of benefits. An AOB signs your claim rights over to a contractor. It sounds convenient and it removes you from control of your own settlement. You should never need to sign one to get a roof fixed.
If a storm has come through your area, start with documentation, not a phone call to your carrier. A free inspection tells you whether you have a claim worth filing before you file anything.
